Do you feel lost trying to find the best way to convey your scientific stories with data? Are you repeating the same types of plots that everyone else does? Are you struggling to simplify a complicated story? Do you feel like your ability to code is getting in the way of your efforts to design a visualization?

In this 5-week program, Pat will lead you through the data visualization fundamentals, best practices, and strategies that he has successfully implemented with his successful research group. You will benefit from direct one-on-one interactions with Pat and other participants to identify concepts employed or ignored in published visualizations, provide constructive critiques, and propose how to develop a makeover strategy to boost the impact of your data visualizations. Best of all, this program involves no coding or software, which will allow you to focus on the big picture of creating effective data visualizations.

Each of the 5 weekly sessions will be 2 hours long and consist of three components:

  • Overview of data visualization concepts
  • Exercises to identify and apply concepts
  • Discussion of your data visualization with feedback on what works and can be improved

By the end of the program, you will have a set of tools that you can use to design, modify, and critique data visualizations. The result will be greater confidence in your ability to relate a compelling data-based story to your audience.

Each session will be hosted via zoom. You can pick from a group meeting on Thursdays at 9AM EST or Fridays at 11AM EST starting September 4th. If you can’t attend a session, recordings of that session will be available within 24 hours.
